In 1868, with the vision of creating Swiss-made pocket watch movements for the American market, watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones (an American engineer and watchmaker) founded the International Watch Company (or IWC as we now call them) in the town of Schaffhausen in Switzerland (that’s where the last bit of its name originates), and the rest is a glorious 150 year history. In 1936, IWC created the first of its Pilot’s watches. The Pilot family was to become emblematic of IWC, with the Big Pilot taking pride of place in the collection.
Geoff’s comment: The IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Annual Calendar Spitfire combines technical elegance with elegant design, just like the Spitfire plane to which it pays tribute. It features a 46mm stainless steel case, a striking slate grey dial and an annual calendar movement, which also takes account of leap years. I am a huge fan of Big Pilot watches from IWC and the annual calendar complication in this watch makes it very special indeed.
