IWC launched their first bronze watch case with the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition “Expedition Charles Darwin” (reference IW379503) in 2014.  Brands like Paneria and Gerald Genta had already trodden this path. Not all bronze is created equally, and like steel, just saying “bronze” doesn’t tell the whole story. First of all, bronze was a popular metal used before we had stainless steel, especially for ships. Stainless steel changed that, but the reason bronze is used in watches has a lot to do with its novelty and colour. Bronze metal also forms a unique patina over time that looks great with age, especially on sport watches. According to IWC, they use a very robust bronze alloy that makes it harder.  This is due to the high ratio of aluminium along with the copper which gives it its warm colour.

So what does bronze have to do with Charles Darwin?  Well, the ship he sailed on to the Galapagos Islands would undoubtedly have had plenty of bronze in its construction.  All that aside, this is an Aquatimer Dive watch and a very handsome one at that.  We all owe a lot to Darwin’s tireless research and discoveries, so why not celebrate the great man with this stunning tribute watch.
