Panerai was founded way back in 1860 as a Swiss watch shop in Florence, Italy. In the 1930s that they started to make watches, and at that time they were actually made by Rolex for Panerai and used to supply the Italian Navy. It wasn’t until 1993 that Panerai started selling watches to the general public. Things ramped up when they became part of the Richemont Group in 1997 and production moved to Switzerland. Since then they have made some really beautiful watches and their own in-house movements.
Geoff’s comment: At 47mm the Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 (PAM01305) is no shrinking violet, but you may be surprised to learn that it wears much more like a “normal” watch. That’s largely due to the titanium construction and thus material weight saving. This is an imposing and quite stunning dive watch that sits squarely in the tool-watch category. I have long had a thing about Panerai and when I see another Panerai wearer (or Paneristi as we are affectionately known) I always give them a secret smile and think “yes, you know watches”.
