Pierre DeRoche was founded in Switzerland’s famous watchmaking hub of Vallee De Joux in 2004 by Pierre Dubois (co-founder). Pierre spent 14 years at Audemars Piguet, but not as a watchmaker, as their Chief Financial Officer and towards the end of his tenure their Chief Operating Officer. Pierre is part of the Dubois-Dépraz family of watchmakers and it is Dubois-Dépraz that supply the modular movements powering the Pierre DeRoche range of fine timepieces.
So what is a modular movement? There are essentially two ways of getting a complication into a watch. It can be an integrated construction or it can be a modular construction. With an integrated construction, the different functions are incorporated within the movement architecture. With a modular construction, the additional functions are provided by a separate mechanism (i.e. a module) that is added onto a base movement, with the latter providing the basic timekeeping functionality. The advantage of a module is that it is built separately and can be coupled with a variety of movements. It is generally more economical to produce and allows brands to use the module on top of an existing calibre.
Operating somewhat anonymously within the watch industry, Dubois-Dépraz keeps its impressive client list confidential. Yet, if you are into watches, there’s a good chance the name Dubois-Dépraz will be familiar. That’s because it is one of the most prominent suppliers in the industry. The company has made a name for itself manufacturing parts and additional mechanisms (in particular chronographs and perpetual calendars) for some of the world’s most famous watch brands. The list of companies having made use of their modules over the years may come as a bit of a surprise. Raymond Weil, Breitling and Omega may not be so surprising, but Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille perhaps will. Pierre DeRoche is in very prestigious company in partnering with Dubois-Dépraz.
The flagship Pierre DeRoche complication, which is featured in this TNT Royal Retro, is the 6 retrograde second hands running a relay around the dial in 10-second increments per needle – a ballet of time. Each of the 6 retrograde second hands is driven by gears and as soon as one completes its 10-second journey the next in line sets off and the previous jumps back to its starting position waiting for its next turn. This complication launched in 2009 and is featured in many Pierre DeRoche models. It is truly something to behold. How often do you just stare at your watch viewing the seconds ticking by one-by-one? Not often I’m sure, but that will change if you add this stunning watch to your collection.
