This quite remarkable and wonderfully elegant timepiece from Girard Perregaux boasts two rather interesting complications that are rarely seen together.  The annual calendar is not an uncommon complication, with its radial date indicator and separate month indicator – displaying the date and month while automatically taking into account the different lengths of the months. It requires just one correction per year on the 28th February, for non-leap years.  The equation of time complication, however, is what sets this beautiful timepiece apart.

So what on earth is an equation of time complication?  It is a somewhat intellectual indication brought into the modern wristwatch era by Audemars Piguet and Blancpain and shows the difference between apparent solar time and mean (average) solar time.  Any clearer?  Put more simply, it is the difference in time you would see on your watch versus that on a sundial.

And now in plain(ish) English – given that the earth orbits around the sun in an elliptical (oval) shape and the earth’s axis is also tilted, there are only 4 days a year when the day is exactly 24 hours long (April 15th, June 14th, September 1st and December 24th). All other days are a little shorter or longer – depending on the position of the earth. This variation is up to +/- 15 minutes per day and this wonderful Girard Perregaux 1966 watch shows that variation via the equation of time complication.
